A Survey: Why did you join Unibodhi?
« Thread started on: Mar 21st, 2007, 01:35am »

This is for research purposes for the yearbook: So why did you join Unibodhi? And what sorts of things have you gotten out of being a member?

I'll start: I joined because Am was like "Oooh there's a Buddhist Society, we should join and learn more about Buddhism, in English" or something like that. Actually I did want to learn more, but the Dharma Talks were never at very convenient times for me last year and not really this year either...

But, I did get involved in Maitri Night last year and have been roped into being a Marketing Officer, despite knowing nothing about marketing. But the yearbook really is my pet. I want to reach out to people through it and express Buddhist ideas, make it really approachable to people.

I have learned that there are many different types of Buddhists and many approaches to Buddhism, as well as finding out that there are infinite possibilities in practically everything. That's kind of comforting actually.

But I've rambled on long enough. Please post!

Ummmm well I don't really know, I saw the stall at O-Week and it looked really nice and calm and pretty cos of the whiteness and stuff. And I was also thinking that I would like to learn more about Buddhism. So I joined, and here I am today

I've learnt quite a lot of stuff, everything has been put forward extremely clearly and logically, it's been fantastic! And Maitri Night was the best

I went to Maitri Night last year too! The short film about the chick and her dog was pretty inspiring. It made me think: I want to be able to bring pets back to life for the un/deserving

Actually, I just thought it would be a cool soc to join, since they looked like they did some fun stuff, and I could mix learning about religion/philosophy/how to live my life and be a good person with fun-ness.

I have attended a total of three dharma talks this semester (I had a clash for a while, but I'm not doing Sanskrit anymore ). The picnic was also enjoyable, and I think I've been roped into writing an article for that

The Dharma talks so far have been fab. After all, you can't learn everything from books, and it's certainly interesting to hear what ideas other people have about Buddhism and how to practice it.

This should maybe count for two posts for its overall wonderfulness

I started going to my local temples a year or so ago with friends and family and I thought it was soo cool the way people had such a strong connection with these statues that stood before them, how they shook these sticks to tell their fortune, and how the monks dressed in their robes looked so wise and satisfied, and the overall peacefulness of the people there... unlike church the people here were a lot more giving and immaterial... so I wanted to learn more about this thing called Buddhism.

I joined Unibodhi in my first year of Animal science (make that the only year in animal science. haha.)..... [I remember very clearly, Si-shan and AIMY. Oh, Aimy was such a great salesperson.. she was SO mild and nice. =D hehe.]
I wanted to learn more about Buddhism, after following my mom blindly to visit monks and temples and chanting these mantras.
I suppose, like Florence... I was like "Oh! Buddhism.. IN ENGLISH!" haha!

I thought it would be a good way to meet like-minded ppl as well. =)
Didn't participate much until 2006... When I went for the Welcome Picnic and started attending more Dharma talks and meditation sessions (mainly because the rooms were nearer to my faculty and so I could arrive on time). THEN! There was Maitri Night... Ahhh.... =)

Anyway, I've definitely learnt much more about Buddhism. Unibodhi has certainly helped me establish a much more concrete foundation on Buddhism..... you can only read so much philosophical books to expand your knowledge. It's really the real life situations and ppl you meet that help ease you into the practice, hence start believing anything.

Lastly, but not leastly... I have met the most wonderful ppl at Unibodhi =) HONESTLY. Haha! Its been so great *tear tear*. hehe!

Good topic this one! Well, technically i am no longer part of Unibodhi plus i signed up 5 years ago now, so not sure if my input was very helpful.

In my first year, at O-wk, I went and joined the Anime society & the Dramatic society and was luke warm about joining unibodhi b/c i thiugh back then joining a religious society was kinda of uncool. But my friend Lawrence was at the stall and he convinced me to join.

5 years later, i would say it was one of the best 'accidental decisions' I made at Uni. I have gained soo much, in terms of learning about Dharma, making good life-long friends as well as developing skills i didnt even know i had. Anyway, Maitri night rocks, and I will always remember the fun times i had acting in the sketches and *singing*(cough) in the choir.

Oooh, this is all good stuff.

Even if you are no longer technically a member, as you will see in the special features, I'm doing a "Where Are They Now?" feature, so I will be asking ex-members why they joined and everything as well as existing members.

So keep it coming everyone!

This reminds me of when our Sanskrit lecturer asked us why we chose to do Sanskrit. Almost everyone was like 'I don't really know why, but it looked cool. Reading Buddhist stuff would be cool too. '

Some things are just meant to be, especially stuff related to religion

I joined Unibodhi because in highschool I heard that there were Student Buddhist Societies in uni. Then, like a few other people have said, I saw their highly attractive stall at O-week. Had to join.

At the welcome picnic at botanical gardens it was really great to meet the members of UNIBODHI.

I've met so many kind and caring people at UNIBODHI and especially at the retreat!

Thanks to all the exco for making it all happen!

I joined Unibodhi in 2002 when I was still in first year of uni because I would like know more about Buddhism. I was welcomed by Unibodhi exco 2002 and participated in Maitri Night since then. Unibodhi is just like a big family to me. Really grateful to get to know so many Buddhist friends there who supported me through my uni life!

interesting question - but i guess it was cause during ADG amanda was telling me about maitri night and how fun it and how you could sing, dance, act etc...and i thought that would be a fun thing to do. I also wanted to learn about buddhism cause ive never understood the religion and the reasons why my parents went to the temple and prayed ever since i was little. All i remember doing when i was very little was running around the temple.
